Downtown Streetscape and Washington Street Gateway and Trail

As part of Delphi’s Stellar Communities improvements, new streetscape design was provided for the entire downtown district along with installation of a multi-use path and gateway along Washington Street. The multi-use path created critical connections between schools, historic neighborhoods, and other points of interest in the community. Project elements included decorative street lighting, brick paver accents, site furnishings, wayfinding, street trees, and landscape areas.

Main Street

HWC worked with the City of Greensburg to obtain a Main Street Revitalization grant from the Office of Rural and Community Affairs (OCRA) to update the south side of Main Street between Franklin and Broadway streets. Ensuring pedestrians felt comfortable along this busy vehicular corridor was an important aspect of this project. Columnar street trees, linear planters, limestone, and black metal benches, cobblestone pavers, and a low maintenance landscape palette are some of the features of this streetscape.

Main Street Streetscape

HWC has provided design, coordination, and full-time construction inspection services for four phases of streetscape along Main Street in downtown Lafayette. Goals of the project were to maximize pedestrian space and allow locations for outdoor dining and public art by introducing bumpouts. Project components include new sidewalk, special paving, street trees, stormwater planters, and installation of decorative bike racks, benches, and trash receptacles. Custom decorative crosswalk surface systems and decals were designed for the farmer’s market and other intersection treatments.

Funded partially by a tourism grant, this pocket park has become a favorite spot for frisbee in the summertime and a programmed event space during the annual Oktoberfest in the fall. HWC worked closely with the city to transform this existing gravel lot into an active urban pocket park. Special features included a copper trellis and dedication plaque, a stone engraved entrance sign, ornamental railings, and a wood trellis feature with evergreen trees as the main backdrop.

The Downtown Loop Trail is an INDOT-funded multi-use path that, when complete, will connect Crawfordsville’s cultural destinations, neighborhoods, downtown shops, and ultimately to the Sugar Creek Trail making downtown Crawfordsville a regional destination for trail tourism. The first phase connects Wabash College to the library, Pike Street Farmer’s Market, Pike Place, and Fusion 54, the downtown workshare community center. The trail consists of a concrete path with custom pavers, new lighting, rest nodes with benches, and shade trees.
