Burkhart Plaza

St. Louis Avenue is located in the heart of downtown Seymour.

HWC worked closely with the City to develop a design focused on strengthening the connection between St. Louis Avenue and the rest of downtown to bring a sense of vibrancy to the community. Music has always been a significant part of the local culture. Well known singer-songwriter John Mellencamp, a Seymour native, wrote the song “Small Town” about the City. The design team drew on this history and significance of music for the conceptual design.

A curbless street was designed to accommodate Seymour’s annual Oktoberfest and other local events. The site features a play mound with sculptural play pieces, an interactive sign, a trellis with porch-style swings, café tables and chairs, musical play instruments, and a custom paving band and seat wall inspired by the shape of a guitar. Green infrastructure was utilized to reduce stormwater runoff by incorporating large infiltration lawn areas along the street edge.

As the third downtown revitalization project HWC has helped Seymour complete in recent years, Burkhart Plaza is part of an ongoing effort to renew the City while honoring the history and culture of this unique community.

Market Street Plaza and Streetscape

The Market Street Streetscape has become a prominent public space in downtown New Albany. Originally conceived as a streetscape project, the existing extra-wide sidewalk allowed for a plaza space to develop between the existing parking row and historic buildings in addition to the typical amenities. Infrastructure work included new sidewalks, curbs, pavement, drainage, and landscaping. Custom features included decorative crosswalks, a landscaped median with a district archway feature, limestone pier light poles with black metal logos, catenary lighting, and a lit photographic map identity piece. Contemporary site furnishings, bright blue lounge chairs, and linear wood picnic tables were placed within the crushed limestone plaza space to invite and encourage visitors and residents to linger while enjoying the surrounding downtown happenings and many recently restored historic facades.

HWC provided design and inspection services for this project. Work was completed in the fall of 2019 at a project cost of $900,000.

Lawrenceburg Pool and Splash Pad

In 2018, the City of Lawrenceburg engaged HWC to assist in a new design for an aquatic attraction to replace their dated and aging splash pad adjacent to the public pool. 

HWC designed a unique pirate-themed attraction, with a small pirate ship play feature and slide as a focal point in a new zero-entry activity pool. The ship is surrounded by a maximum water depth of 2’, the perfect depth for splashing younger children and for adults comfortably sitting on the edge while engaging with their children. 

The activity pool is also flanked on either end by two splash pads, each with spray features further emphasizing the design. The surface of the splash pads is comprised of soft foam tiles that evoke island and water on a treasure map. The concrete deck surrounding the pool and splash pads is also painted with map symbols, including a compass rose, anchor, and red dots leading the way to the treasure chest spray feature on the splash pad. 

The project also included a new concrete deck replacement and a new mechanical building with chemical and filtration equipment for both the activity pool and the splash pad.

Washington Township Murphy Aquatic Park

Murphy Aquatic Park

HWC’s Landscape Architecture group worked closely with the Washington Township Parks and Recreation to design the regional Murphy Aquatic Park in Avon, Indiana. The park is the largest capital project for the Washington Township Parks Department and solidified the park’s position as a regional destination in central Indiana.

It includes a state-of-the-art aquatic facility with a wave pool, activity pool with an inclusive play feature and slide tower, cabanas and shade structures, concessions, and a pool house. In addition to the aquatic facility, the park features wooded and natural areas with trails, fishing pond, sled hill, and inclusive playground.

This project won the Merit Award for Constructed Works over $2 million from the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (INASLA) in 2023. This award recognizes outstanding projects completed by organizations in Indiana to raise standards of excellence and heighten public appreciation of quality landscape architecture.

Princeton Courthouse Square

Courthouse Square

Because of the Stellar Communities designation, the City of Princeton was able to improve the streetscape around all four sides of the courthouse square in one project. The HWC design team selected lighting, hardscape materials, and site furnishings that would best complement the historic courthouse and surrounding facades. Mini plazas with seating were developed within new bumpouts, and the addition of street trees and landscaping provides a buffer between the pedestrian spaces and vehicular areas.
