City of Winchester Gateway

The SR 32 and US 27 interchange evolved into a location for a community gateway as city development spread and traffic volumes increased. The HWC team designed a linear landscape along the corridor with three custom metal monument signs that are lit at night with solar power. Acting as a landmark along the corridor, the gateway now draws potential visitors off the highway toward Winchester’s downtown while simultaneously creating a sense of community pride for residents and local business owners.

Indiana State University River Campus Trail

HWC provided design, coordination, and construction administration for the River Campus Trail Project. This urban trail connects the Indiana State University campus to a growing area of campus along the Wabash riverfront, west of US Highway 41. The final design included a meandering trail to bring pedestrians safely under U.S. Highway 41 along an existing railroad corridor to the track and field stadium and along the top bank of the Wabash River. Custom engraved concrete planters serve as a safety barrier between vehicular traffic and the trail.

Muscatatuck Trail

As a part of the city’s Stellar Communities effort, HWC led the design and implementation of the Muscatatuck Trail, which connects the Muscatatuck County Park to downtown North Vernon with a multi-use trail. The trail begins in downtown North Vernon and extends south through several neighborhoods along a former railroad right-of-way before ultimately connecting to the Muscatatuck County Park. The county park has existing mountain biking and hiking trails, which serve as a natural connection to this multi-use trail.

Fall Creek Trail Extension

HWC led the design and engineering of the Fall Creek Trail Extension Project, which extends the existing shared-use path from Skiles Test Park to Fort Benjamin Harrison Park in Indianapolis. The 10-foot-wide path winds along the scenic Fall Creek corridor and includes portions of trail within the floodway, allowing trail users to experience the flowing waters of the creek. Work included construction of a sidewalk across the Shafter Road Bridge, which provided a critical connection to Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.

Community Park Trail

HWC worked closely with the Town of Remington to secure a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund to develop a trail system within New Park. Main goals of the project were to create a one-mile long walking and biking trail to connect all areas of the park, including their popular splashpad.  A small footbridge and trail node with bike racks and a bike repair station were also included.
